Preparation for Colorado big game hunting
Physical Conditioning - Weight and
health restructions apply since hunting is on foot and requires
a lot of hiking and stamina. Elk hunting is a very demanding sport.
The elevation where we hunt is at 10,000 feet and the terrain can
be steep. So we advise that you prepare yourself physically for
the hunt so you will enjoy it more. Additionally, it will allow
you to acclimate to the high altitude better. Some type of aerobic
conditioning, such as biking, stair climbing and hiking is recommended.
Step or flexibility classes are also suggested.
Rifle - We recommend a bolt action rifle
in the calibers of 30/06, 7mm or 300 mag. Site your rifle
in at 200 yards. Expect shots in the range of 50 yards to 400 yards.
Spending some time shooting your rifle off hand prior to departing
for the hunt is time well spent.
Rifle Scopes – Precipitation and snow can cause fogging. Purchase
a quality scope that can withstand moisture. A scope cover is highly recommended.
Clothing – The weather can vary greatly.
It is not uncommon to see warm clear days mixed in with socked-in
rainy or snowy ones. Bring clothing which can be layered. Good waterproof
hiking boots and some type of insulated snow boots are recommended.
Bring good quality rain gear for your upper body and legs. Please
do not bring Ponchos. Waterproof gloves and head gear are a must.
Plan to dress in layers.
Be very careful not to bring too much gear when packing. Be efficient!!
After booking a hunt, we will send you a list of items to bring.
Duffel and Packing – Please
do not put all of your gear into one bag as it is extremely difficult
to put them on our pack animals. Maximum weight of all your gear
should not exceed 60 pounds and it should be packed into two different
bags weighing approximately 30 pounds each.
Horseback Riding – Take the opportunity to ride some horses and
get the feeling of what it is like to sit in a saddle for 2 hours at a
time.
